Medical Doctors, Africa & Asia - Medair

Posted: 16/01/08; Expires: 31/07/08

Field doctors with Medair generally have a profile in: Tropical Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Public Health, Paediatrics or Family Medicine. Our specialization is Primary Health Care as it represents the main area of medical need for victims of conflict and natural disasters. This includes curative (diagnosing and treatment, TB and Kala-azar programmes, traumatology), and preventative (mother and child health, immunization programmes, health education) care.

Specialists
Medair occasionally has openings for specialists; however, since we generally do not run hospitals, there is very little opportunity for specialists to perform surgery or exclusively practice their specialty. As such, these positions require flexibility and a willingness to be involved in areas of activity outside the specialty.

Main areas of activity

  • Diagnose and treat patients
  • Evaluate the health needs of a population
  • Design health programmes in consultation with local authorities, local NGOs and international organizations »Write proposals for funding and reports
  • Implement, monitor and control health programmes
  • Manage health projects »Train and supervise local staff
  • Report to Medical Coordinator (doctor, nurse or midwife)

Please note: All health professionals working with Medair should be prepared to take on a managing role, as the position will not consist of “hands-on” health provision alone.

Specific requirements

  • Qualified as a Medical Doctor; training in Public Health or Tropical Medicine an asset
  • Minimum 2 years post-graduate, professional experience
  • Good communicator, able to draft proposals and write reports
  • Flexible team-player who adapts well to change
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of French or Arabic an asset

Term:                            2 year contract (first year voluntary depending on experience)
