Anti-Spam Software and Solutions

OSCAR Forum: Reviews : Anti-Spam Software and Solutions
By Mike Frith (Admin) on Friday, October 01, 2004 - 10:10 pm:

Why not share your reviews of Anti-Spam Software and Solutions with others? Here is a selection of replies from OSCAR users about how they combat Spam:

`I have been using Premium Mail offered by BT Yahoo and the spam filter works really well. It does genuine messages along with the junk though, so I have to check my junk mail folder once a week or so before ditching it. The filter looks for words which regularly turn up in spam, so all messages from my daughter who is a health marketing manager end up in the spam folder. 'Health' is one such word!'

`I've found "Points 2" Filter system used by Christian Technology Limited, my site hosts, to be a very effective filter in conjunction with Norton Antivirus (belts & braces). Re Pop Ups the Windows XP Firewall is the best I've found.'

`I have about 500-600 or even more spam e-mails per week. Mainly, I am a target as I send large mail letters out to those in Mission work.
I have found the very best spam filter is SpamSieve. We operate Mac's here, and it is particularly good for Mac's (but we don't get viruses!). You can check them out on SpamSieve. macworld-eddy-2003 Adds Bayesian spam filtering to popular e-mail clients. ... It learns what your spam looks like, so it can block nearly all of it. ...

Since installing it at USD25, it has meant my inbox is my own.'

`Just to let you know, I have been trying out at home a software package called Mail Washer, which is free to download, although the full package and access to their full spam database costs $37 (c£20). I've had the free trial version for less than a week, but it has picked up all the spam we get sent at home very effectively, and has not misidentified any spam at all (the problem we have with our work spam filter, which filters out more legitimate emails than spam!).
Part of the beauty of this system is that it allows you to bounce back spam to the sender before you download it - so that to the spammer it seems as if your email address is defunct, and thus hopefully decreasing the amount of spam you receive over time. It also has a learning function (in the paid for full version) that allows it to recognise spam content as you do. It can also give you a daily, weekly or monthly analysis of the ratio of spam to legitimate mail you are getting, the total amount of junk and genuine mail you are receiving and so forth.
You can download it at http://www.mailwasher.net '

`If a missionary uses an email address provided by their mission support group, then some kind of anti-spam service might have to be put in place by that support group. This is not always affordable because these systems can be very expensive. MexoMail can be used in its place, and would be "put in place" by the missionaries themselves simply by registering on the website and arranging their email to be forwarded to MexoMail. MexoMail also allows missionaries to travel, because they can access their email from any PC that can access the internet (it provides a roaming WebMail service).
MexoMail will protect an existing email address - a missionary does not have to abandon a favourite email address. Even if it has become heavily poluted by spam, Mexomail will destroy the majority if not all spam.
For Christians in general: much spam will contain images, often undesirable to say the least. MexoMail removes all images and attachments if a message comes from someone that has not already been in correspondence. So there is practically no risk of receiving these images i.e. from strangers (nor indeed any viruses).
There is a link to PRICES top right hand side: http://www.mexomail.com. In general it is under £10 per year. In future I'd like MexoMail to be self sufficient so that I can give away some services for free to missionaries and others with traditionally small incomes.
I truly hope some other brothers and sisters in Christ will enjoy this service.'
